Kevin,

I really appreciate you sharing this insight regarding what has been deemed high levels of lp(a). I too have been battling a high level or lp(a) and attempting to reduce it through diet, excercise and the traditional medical belief of prescribing niaspan and a statin...crestor in my case. While on this "chemically induced" regiment, my lp(a) didn't budge much. I am looking for alternative means of affecting my high number and will look to the supplements you mention in another blog. I appreciate the references you site and need to learn more about how to affect this condition. Regarding Dr. Mirkin's comments about new research suggesting that the lp(a) might be too low - do you know what study he is referring to? I've searched to see if any new information regarding this available, but have come up short.

Again, Kevin, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, insight and information regarding steps to a healthier heart; I truly appreciate it.

Best,
Rob

Hey Chris,

Thanks for the comment. It is really hard to stay with the Paleo especially when it comes to getting the sources of protein in your diet for recovery. Especially when I am now very focused on only eating meats that have a high source of Omega 3. But I am doing my best. It takes a lot of planning ahead and coordination, but it is possible.
I don't really do many grains with my recovery as I think I am allergic to grains or at least I have a higher inflamatory response to them even during the recovery window. So, why eat them even during the window if what they end up doing is causing my muscles to get even more inflamed. So, I stick to doing just fruit juice, lots of frozen berries and fruit and protein powder.

The BIG Unknown for me is the protein powder and the source of the protein. Following the logic of my other posts on Omega 3 and Omega 6 and grain fed versus grass fed, does a whey protein powder have high levels of Omega 6 or because it is an isolate is it devoid of Omega 6 and Omega 3? I need to research that and figure out if it is really safe. I guess I will find out the next time I get my blood work back in June. I have eliminated everything else that would be a high source of Omega 6 from my diet.

Do you have an idea on this one?

I keep getting closer and closer to Paleo for Athletes, but I'm far from 100% there. I had lean ground turkey breast for dinner the other night but couldn't help adding some whole wheat naan from Trader Joe's, as dinner was technically in that post-workout block. Then dessert was a large pile of strawberries and blackberries (good!) paired with some cascade fresh vanilla yogurt (bad by paleo standards but good by traditional Chris standards...).

During the day at work I'm eating apples, bananas, oranges and these "Greens Plus" bars from TJs -- mostly dates, almonds & green plants, plus a tasty chocolate coating -- more info at www.greensplus.com.

I'm slowly weaning myself off of breakfast cereals and I've swapped my peanut butter for almond butter. I even have some cashew/macademia in the pantry once this jar of almond runs out...

You're still eating grains during the post-workout window, though, right? Or have you replaced all of those high-glycemix carbs with plant foods like dried fruit or ???

I had not heard of Stemulite until you mentioned it to me.

I think supplements like this that do not have the full support of the medical community are risky. Because it is a supplement the claims that they make are not backed by the FDA. So, all it can be is a claim. From looking at the threads out there, it seems like it could be a waste of money.

Good nutrition and sleep always trump the powder and pill.

yeah, I was reading Omnivore's Dilemna when I wrote this blog post. I tell you, I will never look at meat the same way before I read Pollan. Never again will I buy a non grass fed piece of meat. Never. I would rather go with a salad and nuts and definitely a fish dish than eat another piece of grain fed chicken or beef.

Oly,

Yeah, if only we knew then what we know now. Oh well...

I should blog about my bed next. I bought a high dollar organic natural rubber mattress and organic natural rubber pillow and boy do I sleep well on that mattress. A friend of mine made a point to me once before that really stuck, "You spend over one third of your life in bed, so why spend chump change on your mattress? "

If you could make a choice of what chair you sit in when you work or the pair of running shoes you run a marathon in, you certainly wouldn't buy the most uncomfortable affordable chair or go to the bargain shoe rack at Wal Mart and buy the cheapest pair of running shoes, so why do we do that with mattresses?

Just a thought...

Beares,

Sleep is huge. I used to only get 5-6 hours a night. Now I get 8 hours and have been able to consistently run 100 miles a week in prep for my next marathon (I used to break down at 90+). If only I was better at sleeping when I was young and had better wheels. No matter...I may not be as fast, but I am as fit as I have ever been.

Right on. I've gotten a lot better about getting my sleep the last year or two and I can totally feel it at work when I shortchange myself. Speaking of which, I need to shut the computer off and go to bed!
